Understanding how to navigate the hospitality employment awards, and knowing which award applies to your business and staff can be tricky. There are over 100 Awards set out by the Fair Work Ombudsman, and many of those Awards changed in 2020. Now is the time to get up to scratch with how your business can tick all the right boxes.
Employment Awards determine your workers’ rights and obligations, setting out entitlements such as minimum pay and conditions of employment. Essentially, an Award is a legal document that outlines the minimum pay rates and conditions for employees of your business. It’s vital that your business is complying with the right Awards – sometimes that may mean one award, but in most cases, there are a few you’ll need to be aware of.
Common Awards that apply across the Hospitality industry and that might apply to your business include:
- the Fast Food Industry Award;
- the Hospitality Award;
- the Restaurant Award; and
- the Food and Beverage Manufacturing Award.
If your business is on the path to expansion and you have employees working for your business that is not directly involved in front of house services, such as administrative or clerical work, or marketing work, then other Awards may also apply to your business, and you’ll need to understand all of the applicable obligations that fall across those Awards – minimum pay may apply differently to employees that fall across those Awards, and your employees may be entitled to different levels of leave.
Helpfully the Fair Work Ombudsman helps businesses understand their obligations by setting out the requirements that must be implemented for your various workers on its website. Implementing those different standards can however be a little more difficult if you are manually managing your employees’ leave or pay.
